Meta AI May Share What You Type

You might ask Meta AI an innocent question like, “How can I change my morning routine so I have more time with my son?” or “Is Brutus1975 a secure password?” But what you type may not stay private. Meta now explicitly warns that everything you share — including sensitive details — can be stored and even made public in examples.

Meta AI is built into Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. It often appears as a colourful circle or chat window. In the fine print, Meta states that your prompts can be used to improve its AI. That means your messages could end up as anonymised examples or training data for future systems. While your name isn’t shared, the content you type still may be.

This warning only appears the first time you use Meta AI or buried deep in the privacy policy, meaning many users miss it. Sharing personal details like health information, locations, or banking data can increase the risk of misuse. In the worst case, this could lead to targeted ads, unwanted exposure, or even identity theft.

What you should do

  • Keep prompts general: avoid sharing personal or sensitive details.

  • Don’t use AI for private matters: never type in health, family, or banking information.

  • Check the info screen: click the (i) icon to see how Meta handles your data.
